Seedling shelves and egg cartons

I'm experimenting with using egg cartons as seed raising trays. I hope they don't disintegrate before the seedlings get big enough to plant out. The shelves in the pic are just clothing shelves I got from my local op shop. Having my seedlings here should keep my back porch a bit clearer!

  1. Hi Jess,
I tried them once, but found that the cardboard actually wicked the water out of the potting soil and they dried out too much. I have heard of people putting half eggshells inside the egg cartons, and growing seedlings in them, but I would probably try them in something like a cheap kitty-litter tray with a shallow layer of water, so they can soak that water up.

  2. Thanks for your comment. You're right that the cardboard wicks the water away from the soil - they do dry out very quickly! I find that if I water them twice a day they work pretty well, but as soon as I forget for a day...bye bye baby seedlings. They're certainly not ideal but I am lacking in pots so I'm happy to keep experimenting with them! I might try the half egg shell idea or kitty litter tray - thanks :)
